Publishers:
The two biggest music magazines Kerrang and Q, both look at
different genres of the music industry. Kerrang focuses on rock and metal plus
scream and Q focuses on a more all-round look so they don’t care about genre as
much as they will use an artist and band not caring for genre.
Kerrang look mainly at a specific genre and can then aim to
push it to its target audience, also by having a specific genre it makes it
easier for them to focus on their target audience. Kerrang are both online
using websites and also apps to distribute their magazines as well as having
hard copy’s like magazines so people could purchase them on their way to work
or on their way home. Having it online makes it easier for customers to get the
product whenever but also means they might be able to digitally download it and
then read it whenever where ever thy want. Their magazine has the same basic
layout every time, this makes it simple and also memorable for the customer
their basic layout is the logo at the top behind the main image, then a band or
artist veering the centre and of the image, then smaller images going down the
left hand side of the cover, and then yellow and white text everywhere else.
This simple layout makes it easier for readers to notice everything.
Q is a very modern and unspecific magazine compared to
Kerrang, this is because Q doesn’t focus on one specific genre this gives them
a much larger target audience to work with and draw in, this also allows them
to have much more artists to talk too and interview as they are not held back
by genre and specific needs. They also use digital media as well as hard copies
to distribute their magazines. Giving their audience an easier way to read the
magazine anywhere they want. Q use the same basic colour scheme for their
magazine, this is red and black, whenever you read a magazine and see these
colours you mostly think about Q magazine. They have a basic layout each time
of having the logo which is a white Q in a red box at the top left hand corner
of the magazine.
If I had to choose a company to work with I would choose
Kerrang as they are specific to the genre I would like to follow, which means I
can have more expertise in my magazine as well as a better chance at finding
specific new artists to use for my magazine as well as other known artists to
use which meet my genre needs.
Distribution:
To distribute my magazine I will have put them in Tesco’s
and other super market stores this is because the stores are more convenient
and used than WHSmith, most people go to these stores to buy food and drinks
and other various things as well as newspapers so I can have my magazine in the
same area allowing more people to see it and notice it, if I had it in WHSmith
I would be in a target market of readers but I might not have the same mass
courage as I would if I put my product in supermarket stores.
Target
Market:
My target audience will be 14 – 48 and who follow rock and
spoken word, I will look at more modern rock as well as older rock for example
more modern will be fall out boy and older rock would be the Black Sabbath.
This gives me a more specific target market to work with but by having modern
and older rock bands and artists I have extended the age range of the magazine
so I can have more customers.
