Dolby

James, I think you need to go over the analysis of the existing magazines and add a lot more detail to help you. Use all the information given to help with the analysis as well as the handout on 'How to analyse a music magazine'. You should be also looking at the contents and a double page spread. I can't see any other work on marketing and distribution and little on audience so this part of the course is basic at the moment

Magazine planning presentation

This is my planning work for my magazine. I have used prezi to present it as it is more accessible than power point and also more interesting. The prezi has information about my layout and other features and parts of my magazine.

magazine questionnaire analysis

I have created a magazine questionnaire to help me with my research this information allows me to make my magazine more specific to areas which members of the public want helping me make a good magazine.

What gender are you?
This question allows me to know what gender has answered my questionnaire, the result was mostly male with three females.

What is your age?
This gives question helps me to look at what different ages read magazines and have an interest in music it also gives me a better idea of my target market, most people who took this questionnaire were between the ages of 1-17.

What genre do you like the most?
With this question I am able to work out what genre of music people listen to with this I am able to focus my magazine genre on the bigger audience, the main genre participants choose was rock this tell me that I should use rock as my genre for my magazine.

Who are your three favourite artists or band?
This question allows me to understand and know what bands and artist’s consumers like and which ones I should have in my magazine to draw more people in. this information I gathered told me I should include AC/DC, Fall out boy, Asking Alexandra, the foo fighters and Bring me the horizon in my magazine. My list of bands/artists include:
Grand master flash
DJ yoda
Dan le sac
Eminem
Polar bear
Kate tempest
Fall out boy (2)
Bring me the horizon (2)
Asking Alexandra (2)
Foo fighters (2)
AC/DC (3)
Kiss
George Ezra
Michael buble
black veil brides
I prevail
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Eric Clapton
Pink Floyd
Def Lappard
Led zeppelin
AC/DC
Wheatus

What colour scheme would you like my magazine to have?

I put this question on my questionnaire so that I could have a colour scheme which people wanted and would remember, the results told me that I should use the colours black, red and blue.
How often do you buy a magazine?

This question allows me to know when I should release a new magazine, the results told me people read and buy magazines every month.

How much would you be willing to pay for a magazine?
This tells me how much money I should put as the price tag for my magazine making sure people have enough money to buy it, the result I got was between the price range of £2-£2.50, I will make my magazine cost £2.50

Would you like to know about new artists?
This question allows me to know if I should include new and upcoming artists this allows readers to know about more artists coming into the industry and allows them to know them before they become famous, this can attract more people read the magazine.

What information would you like to hear about in the magazine?
This question allows me to know what information I should have in my magazine this question will link to my contents and front cover, the main piece of information that the public would like me to show in my magazine is interviews this will be double page spreads and knowing story’s about the band, the next is tour dates for bands this allows my readers to know when their favorite bands will be on tour and where, lastly my readers would like to know about reviews this will include songs and videos this will be our critics talking about peoples song their tempo and rhyme as well as the actual music video and how it might link to the song.

Kerrang magazine

Bold text used to make the words clearer and pop out at the audience. Use of 8 medium shots to help link to their magazine ad also draw the customer in with images of bands they like. A tag line is used at the bottom of the page when it says ‘ultimate review’ trying to draw the reader in by saying their reviews are ultimate. The kicker is about Avenged sevenfold and they’ve made this the biggest piece of text as well as the title of the magazine. Colour scheme is the same as most Kerrang issues with the title being in yellow and then the other colours being black and red.

Uses subheadings to separate out pages so readers can find specific features quicker and also they use different colours and have their own black background. Still uses the colour scheme from the front cover which is yellow red and black. Shows the issue number and the date of the magazine on the top of the page. Uses seven images four of them being medium size and the other three being small, out of three of the medium ones they have numbers on them linking the images to a specific page. Also includes a ‘thank you’ section and an editor’s section on the contents page giving the readers a small review of the magazine.

Uses a large picture of the band then puts all the paragraphs in front of them. And the large image is a direct address as the band is looking at the camera which makes us think they are looking at us. A pull quote has been used to get the reader’s attention and the quote has been made bigger so that the reader will notice it and then read it. This double page spread still uses the colour scheme of the magazine (red, yellow and black) but this one also include white changing it up a bit and making it seem different from everything else. This double page spread uses a stand first to give the reader some information before they read the smaller paragraphs.

product placement

Product placement task

Publishers:

The two biggest music magazines Kerrang and Q, both look at different genres of the music industry. Kerrang focuses on rock and metal plus scream and Q focuses on a more all-round look so they don’t care about genre as much as they will use an artist and band not caring for genre.

Kerrang look mainly at a specific genre and can then aim to push it to its target audience, also by having a specific genre it makes it easier for them to focus on their target audience. Kerrang are both online using websites and also apps to distribute their magazines as well as having hard copy’s like magazines so people could purchase them on their way to work or on their way home. Having it online makes it easier for customers to get the product whenever but also means they might be able to digitally download it and then read it whenever where ever thy want. Their magazine has the same basic layout every time, this makes it simple and also memorable for the customer their basic layout is the logo at the top behind the main image, then a band or artist veering the centre and of the image, then smaller images going down the left hand side of the cover, and then yellow and white text everywhere else. This simple layout makes it easier for readers to notice everything.

Q is a very modern and unspecific magazine compared to Kerrang, this is because Q doesn’t focus on one specific genre this gives them a much larger target audience to work with and draw in, this also allows them to have much more artists to talk too and interview as they are not held back by genre and specific needs. They also use digital media as well as hard copies to distribute their magazines. Giving their audience an easier way to read the magazine anywhere they want. Q use the same basic colour scheme for their magazine, this is red and black, whenever you read a magazine and see these colours you mostly think about Q magazine. They have a basic layout each time of having the logo which is a white Q in a red box at the top left hand corner of the magazine.

If I had to choose a company to work with I would choose Kerrang as they are specific to the genre I would like to follow, which means I can have more expertise in my magazine as well as a better chance at finding specific new artists to use for my magazine as well as other known artists to use which meet my genre needs.

Distribution:

To distribute my magazine I will have put them in Tesco’s and other super market stores this is because the stores are more convenient and used than WHSmith, most people go to these stores to buy food and drinks and other various things as well as newspapers so I can have my magazine in the same area allowing more people to see it and notice it, if I had it in WHSmith I would be in a target market of readers but I might not have the same mass courage as I would if I put my product in supermarket stores.

Target Market:

My target audience will be 14 – 48 and who follow rock and spoken word, I will look at more modern rock as well as older rock for example more modern will be fall out boy and older rock would be the Black Sabbath. This gives me a more specific target market to work with but by having modern and older rock bands and artists I have extended the age range of the magazine so I can have more customers.

Q magazine analysis

The kicker is about Noel galliger and they have made the title seem funny due to the fact of them covering the words around his head and then making the head line ‘what’s in Noel’s head now?’ they have also made the word Noel is bigger and also has different colour to the other words to emphasize his importance to the magazine and that he is the main person. The tagline is the same on every ‘Q’ magazine and it is ‘the world’s greatest music magazine’ this engages the reader because they will think it’s the greatest magazine and want to but this one instead of other ones. At the bottom they use the same colour scheme as they do got the logo which keeps the customers thinking about the company, but then they change the colours for other secondary labels. Tag line is used again to talk about the stories of the The Who as they say it’s the ‘Greatest stories’. The master head is the logo of the magazine ‘Q’ which is nice and big so customers can always find the magazine and know who is magazine is by.

Lots of images used to help grab the reader’s attention and to make them look at the main articles. Large title with the logo as well to push the magazine into your mind. Use of ‘The Who’s’ colours to grab the attention and also to link with the page and information. Use of box to group the information into and also to make separate from the rest as could be seen as more important. Large font size for the numbers and also in colourful boxes to grab reader’s attention.

Stand first is used at the beginning of another piece of text grabbing the reader in. this is talking about Noel’s views on digital download this in no way relates to the large pieces of text in this double page. The layout of this double page spread is quite simple, it uses the same basic colour scheme of the magazine (red, black and white) but then incorporates ‘the Who’s’ as well it’s a nice way to draw people in. As we can see they have used drop capital twice in this double page spread, this is used to separate the two different pieces of information. We see four different medium shots used in this image all relating back to parts in the text, giving the reader some time away from all the writing and also so help the reader visualise what is being said.
